Hiei… isn’t quite sure how to react to that. For a moment he immediately looks away, clearly feeling a bit embarrassed by the thought that it was more personal this way. He’d had the thought that it was maybe predictable that he would gift Kurama something black, but he hadn’t thought about how it may be a slightly personal touch. Perhaps even a sort of notion that he should not have made, a trinket to remind Kurama of him when he knows damn well that is not how the fox views him.
He’s told him, after all -
Still not looking directly at him, Hiei decides that maybe it’s time to eat crow here.
The reaction definitely supports his original thought to maybe avoid saying anything in the first place, but it's too late for that now. As it stands, he's starting to feel that if Hiei is made uncomfortable by his honesty it does neither of them any favors to shy away from it.
"Why would I do that? It was a gift and this is the one you picked."
Hiei barely bites back a sardonic sort of laugh as Kurama asks why he would. Of course he could give the honest answer - that maybe he’d given something that he shouldn’t have, and that it was fine if Kurama decides he would rather not have it that way. But of course, this is Hiei. The honest answer is a bit too revealing, and beyond that Kurama has already elaborated on how he feels about anything between them.
He is an idiot who still gives despite knowing that is the problem, really.
“Black isn’t really your first choice.” Considering he doesn’t think he’s ever seen the color feature in Kurama’s expanse of a wardrobe other than small bits for accessories. Again he wonders if he pays too much attention.
Kurama is, once again, faced with reeling in his emotions. He hasn't exactly grasped what they even are at this stage, but that's par for the course with someone so committed to denial about his own feelings up against someone outright refusing to talk about it any time a hint of the topic comes up.
"Maybe not, but it is yours. It will remind me of you, and isn't that the point?"
Of course, the fox has no way of knowing that Hiei was thinking that exact thing, just that it is in the nature of gift giving, generally speaking. The association made between the gift and who it came from.
Finally Hiei is inspired to actually look at the fox, though its’s in that way that he’s suspicious something is going on. He’d basically just said what he was thinking, after all. For a moment he checks the Jagan to make sure there’s nothing fishy going on thanks to the evil eye, and once he establishes that there’s no funny business going on there…
Well obviously he has to be sarcastic in the face of his discomfort, right? Annoying Kurama will definitely throw him off of his trail here -
“Are you planning on my disappearance? We spend most of the day together.”
Hiei gives him that suspicious look and Kurama watches quietly, taking a moment to answer when the fire demon does speak. Not because he's annoyed by any stretch of the imagination, but of course Hiei isn't thinking of the very real possibility that any one of them could vanish without warning. Or that they don't know what that even means for them while they're still trapped here. It isn't like home where they have Botan or Koenma for clarity.
"You know by now that I plan for every possibility, Hiei."
"Yes, I do." He knows it a little too well in this place, where he's heard all of the fox's theories about what is going on here or why. he ought to start listening, but since this is Hiei... no. He'll stay just how he is, thank you. Let someone else do the thinking for him since he tends to default to the best way to fight his way out of any single situation.
He's still trying to finagle it to work with this one, somehow.
"But still. Don't go planning too early." His way of saying he has no plans to go anywhere unless Kurama has thought of something he's unaware of.
